Chapter 11

Charlotte looked at the two of them. “Victoria, Tim, meet Rose and Sarah.” She gestured at each of us in turn. I walked over, a little unsure of what to say.

Victoria looked as uncertain as I was feeling. I smiled at her, hoping it helped her apprehension a little. She was tiny, barely five feet tall, with dark hair brushing her shoulders and long sideswept bangs. She had dark eyes and olive skin. She was beautiful. There was no other word to describe her.

Tim Harding was at least a foot taller with sandy blond hair, pale blue eyes and a cautious expression. Under the circumstances I’d look wary, too.

“Victoria came to my house a little while ago,” Charlotte said. That explained why she hadn’t called first. “She and Tim want to talk.”

Rose had joined us. She smiled at Victoria and Tim and somehow the awkwardness in the room eased a little. “Why don’t we go back to the office?” she said.

“That’s a good idea,” Charlotte said.

Rose led the way.

Charlotte put a hand on my arm. “Join us, please,” she said.

I nodded. “I will, but I need to go get Mac to watch the shop.” While the others went into the office, I sprinted across the parking lot. Mac was doing something to a shelf in one of the lockers. He looked surprised to see me.

“Charlotte just walked in with Victoria Stone and her husband,” I blurted. “Could you come and watch the store?”

“Of course,” he said. He pulled the doors to the workshop closed and followed me inside. He gave my arm a squeeze at the office door and headed for the shop. I joined the others.

Charlotte and Rose were sitting at the table with Victoria, who was showing them pictures of Rachel on her phone.

“Looks at those curls,” Rose exclaimed.

Tim was checking out the old black-and-white aerial photo of the harbor front that hung on the wall to the right of the office door. The original photograph had been taken almost a hundred years ago. Mr. P. was pointing out landmarks. “That’s Windspeare Point,” I heard him say.

“It’s looks so much smaller from the air than when you’re on the ground walking around,” Tim said.

Rose smiled at Victoria. “Now that Sarah is here, what did you want to talk to us about?”

Tim went to stand behind his wife. He put a hand on her shoulder and she reached up and covered it with her own.

“I know that you’re looking into Ian’s death,” Victoria said. “My, uh, former father-in-law, Richard, asked me to talk to you.” She cleared her throat. “I know there have been whispers around town that Richard’s friend, Mr. Caulfield, was helping Ian. It’s not true.”

“What makes you so certain?” Rose asked.

She took a moment before she spoke. “First of all, Ian didn’t trust anyone.” She gave a brittle laugh. “Ironic considering he faked his own death. And second, he would have never turned to a friend of his father for help.”

“Why is that?” Mr. P. asked.
